E. M.’s topic for today isn’t mothers, which would be appropriate since it’s Mother’s Day (and a happy one to all you mothers, stepmothers, foster mothers, mothers-in-law, grandmothers, aunts, mother figures, single fathers who have to be both father and mother to their children, nuns, teachers, nurses–basically, anyone who is or acts as a mother). Instead (and I’m pretty happy about it), today’s topic is Your Blog.
When did you start your blog? January 5, 2012, though I consider the day that I started blogging in earnest July 1, 2014, when I started daily blogging. Before then it was hit-or-miss.
Did you start with a theme, or did it come later on? Yes. At the time, I envisioned myself as becoming a great fiction writer at some point, so this started out as a writer’s blog. One day, I asked myself "exactly how much fiction have you written?" and the answer was "not much," which caused me to evaluate my life as a fiction writer. I realized that I don’t even like reading fiction that much, and that I’d rather talk about music and TV and my crazy life as a one-handed writer and tell stories of my misspent youth and adulthood. So the focus turned on a dime (unfortunately, the dime was in Rocky Rococo’s pocket – who remembers that?) and I started writing every day about whatever. Now I average three posts a day.
What is your favorite post that you have ever written on your blog? Probably this one, which I wrote for the 2014 A to Z Challenge.
Do you share your blog with friends and family, or do you keep your blogging world separate from them? I finally decided to reveal the blog to my family on Hallowe’en 2014. My uncle, Jack Connelly, and my brother Kip comment here regularly, and several people from Ghostletters, the mailing list I ran for many years, follow by mail and comment occasionally. Normally, I hear from the family on Facebook.
What is the best advice you could give someone who is new to blogging? The more you do it, the better you get. You don’t have to post every day, but you have to post regularly.
And that’s it from me for this week…
