Battle of the Bands 1 Minute

We have two fingerstyle guitarists dueling today over who does the better version of Toto’s "Africa". Let’s get right to it!

  2. Decide which song you like the best.
  3. Vote for your favorite by leaving me a comment with your choice. If you feel like telling us why, feel free.

    Last week evaporated on me. I’m glad I remembered to swing by this morning to look for your battle. I’m going with Kent Nishimura. I loved the lone guitar version the best but his challenger did do a nice job. Great battle, my friend. Have a blessed week!

  11. Both were very good… but I like Kent’s better…it was a little more simple and to the point. Alexandr is more flashy and it’s great…but I like I said…I’ll take Kent.

    Thanks for visiting Shady’s Place today, good buddy!

    In your June 1 band battle, we are presented with a clear choice between a straightforward acoustic guitar performance of “Africa” and a highly embellished version. I enjoyed the version by artist #1, Kent. As I moved on and began listening to artist #2, Mr. Misko, I was at first taken aback and somewhat put off by the wide open, reimagined arrangement. However, the longer I listened, the more I appreciated Alexandr’s artistry. He demonstrated the range of his instrument’s capabilities as he ad libbed his way through the piece and took the melody in unexpected directions. Since I have heard the original song countless times, I found Alexandr’s creative interpretation refreshing, and I’ve decided to give him my vote.

  14. Both are very good. I love the song and had never heard it without the words before. I vote for Alexandr as he was more interesting to watch, plus the little extras he put into it. :)

  19. My vote goes to Alexandr Misko. I do like his style and ‘flair’, but also, I can hear the melody much more clearly in his version. If I didn’t already know the song, I’d struggle to hear it in Kent’s version (which is still very nice).

  20. Both versions are very nice and quite similar in sound. Kent’s playing is solid steady and very clean. Alexandr shows more flair and interesting technique. That guy does some pretty crazy things with his guitar and still has a pleasant sound despite the flamboyance of his style.

    Give my vote to Alexandr.
