Jim’s prompt for this week, "excitement, pleasure, sentiment, spirit," comes from Melanie. I have the perfect song…
"Rhapsody In The Rain" was written by Twyla Herbert and Lou Christie and released as a single in 1966, and was also on his 1966 album Painter Of Hits. The original version used language that sounded to program directors like they were having sex in the car, and wouldn’t play the record, so MGM Records had Lou do a less-controversial version. That version reached #10 in Canada, #16 on the Hot 100, #37 in the UK, and #40 in Australia. The original (dirty) version is below; you can hear the less provocative version here. As for the video to this, I have no idea why the young lady is dancing in the rain…
A lonely rhapsody ’cause on our first date
We were makin’ out in the rain
And in this car our love went much too far
It was exciting as thunder
Tonight I wonder where you are
The windshield wipers seemed to say
“Together – together – together – together”
And now they are saying
“Oh, ne…ver, ne…ver”
Ooh-wee, ooh-wee, baby
Rhapsody in the rain
Rhapsody in the rain
Angels keep cryin’ for me (don’t stop)
Angels keep cryin’ for me (don’t stop)
Baby, I’m parked outside your door
Remember makin’ love, makin’ love, we were makin’ love in the storm
(sha-la-la-la la-la)
And then a flash from above
Lightning – lightning – lightning – lightning
Just li-ike our love
It was exciting, exciting
Ooh-wee, ooh-wee, baby
Rhapsody in the rain
Rhapsody in the rain
Angels keep cryin’ for me (don’t stop)
Angels keep cryin’ for me (don’t stop)
Yesterday, bring back yesterday
Rhapsody in the rain
Rhapsody in the rain
Angels keep cryin’ for me (don’t stop)
Angels keep cryin’ for me (don’t stop)

And that’s Song Lyric Sunday (and Song of the Day) for June 12, 2022.

Nice choice today. Makes me want to find some rain to dance in. :)

Ahh yes…the censors because none of this ever, ever happened. I enjoyed listening to this song and who hasn’t felt Rhapsody in the rain.

It was OK to do it, just not to talk about it…

The lyrics sound very innocent to me. It sounds very similar to Lou Christie’s other hit Lightning Striking Again.

Sure does sound the same, doesn’t it? Guess he didn’t figure he’d waste a lot of time on the music. I think they objected to “making love,” which they thought people would conflate with “f—ing.”

I remember this it’s great .. as to the video no idea why she dancing? Not sure that’s dancing it could be semaphor minus the flags… And really what a dismal backdrop too….. Still loved it well done 💜😊

I think that’s the only video out there that has the original lyrics and is available in Canada. I could be wrong, but I’ve used it on several occasions and I haven’t had any complaints…

No it’s not a complaint 😊😊
