Singer, songwriter, actor, and author Burl Ives was born in this day in 1909. He acted in movies such as East Of Eden (1955), Cat On A Hot Tin Roof (1958), and The Big Country (1958), and provided the voice for Sam The Snowman in The Rankin-Bass Christmas special Rudolph, The Red-Nosed Reindeer (1964). Primarily a singer, he reached #19 on the Hot 100, #6 on the Adult Contemporary chart, and #3 on the Country chart with 1962’s "Call Me Mr. In-Between."
I remember him singing The Ugly Bug Ball and starring in the films, but don’t know this one at all!

Always thought Burl Ives was a good singer and wonderful actor. I remember some time back we picked our favorite rendition of Ghost Riders in the Sky and his rendition of the song is available on Youtube.

I forget if I included him in that series of Battles of the Bands. His version is kind of spooky, which is to say perfect for the song.

I love Burl Ives who was so good in The Big Country and excellent as Big Daddy in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof . Who doesn’t love that snowman. This is quite a good song and I need to look up the lyrics.

He had a few country songs that charted, and did a really good version of “Ghost Riders In The Sky.” He was a real classic.

I guess because of my age…I always think of Rudolph the Red‐Nosed Reindeer when I think of Burl Ives.

And his other holiday classic, “Holly Jolly Christmas.” That’s my personal favorite.
