BATTLE OF THE BANDS: “Bein’ Green”

I got the idea for this battle from Gary Wells over at SoulRide, who dedicated a post to the Sesame Street song "Bein’ Green," written by Joe Raposo for Jim Henson in his guise as Kermit The Frog. Frank Sinatra did a cover of the song for his 1971 album Sinatra & Company, and since then many artists have done it, including Tony Bennett, Ray Charles, Van Morrison, and the two ladies who will be competing today. Let’s get to it…

Lena Horne

Diana Ross

Those are our contestants for today. Here are your instructions, if you’d like to be a judge on this one. There are no special qualifications for job, just a working pair of ears and an opinion.

  1. Listen to the two songs.
  2. Decide which song you like the best.
  3. Vote for your favorite by leaving me a comment with your choice. If you feel like telling us why, feel free.
  4. Then, visit the other participants and vote in their Battles:

You have until next Wednesday, June 15 at noon Eastern Time to cast your vote. That’s when I’ll tally them and announce the winner.

The lines are now open. Good luck to Lena Horne and Diana Ross!

  1. Lena Horne, a fabulous singer, seemed to try too hard to make it work, IMO. I agree with Arlee Bird that Diana Ross sounds like Michael Jackson, however, I like her version better. My vote goes to Diana Ross.

  2. For the life of me I can’t ever remember ever hearing this song. I’m a great Sinatra fan, as you know, and I can’t remember him singing it. My vote goes to Lena Horne.

  3. I have to give this to the stunning Lena Horne who knew how to belt out this tune. Arlee is right…Diana sounds like Michael Jackson. Maybe that is what Michael Jackson wanted to sound like. Lena gets my vote

  4. Wow…this is the first time I heard the traditional version of the song…I like Hornes more…the only one I’ve ever know is Van Morrison’s version .

  5. Neither was as good as the original by Kermit or the version by Van Morrison, which I actually like a good bit. These two versions were show pieces that basically I find almost unlistenable on their own. AS filler stuff for a concert or a TV show it works okay, but I’d hate having either of these on an album that I listened to.

Usually I like Lena Horne a lot, but I found her to be boring on this performance. Diana Ross was a little better even though I would have believed it was Michael Jackson if you had told me that and I didn’t know any difference.

Give my vote to Michael–er, I mean, Diana Ross.
