Throwback Thursday 45: Nighttime Rituals

Maggie did the questions this week…

Did you share a room with a sibling, or did you have a room of your own? I had my own. My brothers shared. Sorry, guys…

Did you resist going to bed or did you go willingly? I usually went willingly…

Did someone put you to bed, tuck you in, or read you a bedtime story? When I was younger, yes.

Was there a religious component, like prayers, to your nighttime routine? On and off, yes.

Did you go to sleep immediately, or lie awake? Usually lie there awake.

Did you journal, read a book, talk on the phone or with your siblings, or watch television when you were supposed to be sleeping? Listen to the radio. I’d put it on at bedtime and it’d be on all night. It was great when the White Sox were on the West Coast.

Did you ever sleepwalk? Apparently. Mom said she heard someone fiddling with the lock to the back door, got up investigate and found me trying to open it. She asked me where I was going and I told her "to school." Apparently this happened twice and after the second time she had a second lock installed on the door. I don’t remember anything about it.

Did you remember having dreams? If you dreamed, did you ever have bad dreams? Do you remember any dreams specifically? I had a few dreams in my time. A couple of them were really disgusting and no, I will not share them. I remember I had a broken spring in my mattress once, and every dream I had ended with me being stuck in the ass, because evidently I would roll over on the spring.

As I’ve discussed here a few times, tests of the Emergency Broadcast System used to scare me, because I’d be sitting there minding my own business, and suddenly this would pop up…

Anyway, I would have these dreams where a panel would open up in my room and I’d be shown this. I know, I’m strange…

Were you afraid of the dark? Did you sleep with a nightlight or sneak into your sibling’s or parent’s room at night because you were afraid? Maybe once or twice.

Did you have or attend sleepovers or slumber parties? Feel free to elaborate. No. I stayed at a friend’s house once or twice, and that was it.

Tally-ho and away we go!
See you next week with a brand new show!

  1. Thanks for joining in John. I need the TV on to fall asleep. Too much quiet and my brains works overtime. I think I would have slept on the floor if my mattress had sprung a spring.

  2. I’ve always been fascinated by dreams and still remember several of my childhood dreams. Later, in high school and college, I would write dreams down soon after I woke up so I wouldn’t forget them. Now I no longer write down dreams as a rule, but I probably should because I have some rather interesting dreams sometimes. When I don’t write them down they are very quickly forgotten.

  3. I am surprised how many people said they were sleepwalkers, but I can relate to the broken spring in the mattress. We learned to sleep around the flaws in our mattresses. We did not have a radio in our bedrooms, but later on I loved to listen to faraway stations on a clear night. Always love your responses and the animations were perfect.
