Country singer and songwriter Bobbie Gentry was born on this day in either 1942 or 1944 (I found both dates in various sources). Best known for her song "Ode To Billie Joe," she recorded with Glen Campbell and ultimately had four Top Ten hits on the Adult Contemporary chart. Here she sings her most famous song on The Andy Williams Show.

She was stunning. I remember watching her on TV (I was eleven) and feeling the hormones surge.

The song, or the singer? I’d go with both…

It’s a long way from the streets of New York to the bridge across the Tallahatchie River. They’re worlds apart, actually…

Sure! She did so many other great songs, including “Fancy” and a cover of Classics IV’s “Stormy.” She was definitely a fine singer and songwriter…
