Hi, John!
Thanks for visiting Shady’s Place, good buddy! I figured you wanted me to vote in your latest band battle, and I’m glad I didn’t miss these two excellent renditions of a song I am hearing for the first time, “On The Beach.” Both versions are worthy of competing in a contest of this kind, because both veteran artists are great singers, songwriters and musicians. I can’t say anything negative about either recording, and therefore I am going to focus on what I liked best about Boz Scaggs’ blues. I favor it’s purity and simplicity. His soulful voice reminds me of Joe Simon, and I felt no pain as I drifted along to the guitar-driven instrumental interlude. The recording is grade-A, and I give my vote to Boz Scaggs.
Enjoy your weekend, good buddy. I look forward to seeing how your battle turned out when the polls close on Monday.

While this kind of depressing song does suit Neil Young, I am stunned that Boz Scaggs would even attempt it. Assuming the lapse in judgment was temporary, I’m still voting for Boz π

What Dan Antion said.
I can’t believe I’m voting for Neil Young because A) I don’t like most of Neil’s stuffs (and this has nothing to do with his politics… which I also dislike) and B) I generally DO like Boz Scaggs.
But Boz nearly put me to sleep with this one. And Neil had enough musical dynamics going on (subtle though they was) that I found this melancholy, confessional ballad interesting, to some degree.
A very surprised me delivering a gift to Neil Young.

I’m surprised that this song has been covered by any other major artist. This song has a lot of memories for me as I used to listen to this album a lot when I was alone during the time I was sharing a mountain cabin with 3 friends. This was a wonderful time for me, but it was sometimes very melancholy so this album was perfect for those times.
I love what Boz did with the song and my initial response that I liked it better than Neil’s version, But then I listened to Neil’s version after not having heard it for quite some time. No, I still like Neil’s depressive version.
Give my vote to Neil Young.

Although I love the unique guitar styling of Neil Young, I choose Boz because I like his voice and it speaks to me more

My God was that depressing! Two of the most gloomy songs I have ever heard. At any rate, I will pick Boz Scaggs.

John,
You and Lee used Neil Young in your battles. Did you boys plan this? π Okay, this is easy for me. I’m giving my vote to Boz Scaggs. I’m not a fan of Young’s but putting that aside, I by far prefer Scaggs.

As hard as it is for me to choose Neil Young over Boz Scaggs, that’s what I have to do. I think this song fits Neil Young’s unique style.
