British fusion and progressive rock guitarist Allan Holdsworth was born on this day in 1946. As Wikipedia says, “Holdsworth was known for his esoteric and idiosyncratic usage of advanced music theory concepts, especially with respect to melody and harmony.” This performance of “Looking Glass” is from a 1997 performance in Frankfurt.
He sure knows how to play that guitar with a mixture of rock, jazz and other genres I can’t remember.

A lot of it makes sense when you realize he’s using advanced theory to build the solos. I know enough of the theory to get by, but he’s gone quite a few steps beyond me.

The stuff he would do just blew my mind. It sounds like mass confusion at first, then you start to understand what he’s doing….
