Song of the Day: Porter Wagoner, “Green, Green Grass Of Home”

Country Music Hall of Fame singer Porter Wagoner was born on this day in 1927. Nicknamed “Mr. Grand Ole Opry,” he had 81 charted singles from 1954 to 1983. He discovered Dolly Parton on his show in 1967, and the two of them were a duo in the late ’60’s and early ’70’s; according to her, she wrote “I Will Always Love You” as a farewell song to Wagoner when she went solo. “Green, Green Grass Of Home” was a #4 hit on the Country chart for him in 1965.
