For today’s Battle, I’ve chosen a classic song: Edith Piaf’s “La Vie En Rose.” I have two lovely chanteuses who I’d like you to choose between…
Paola Hermosin
Paola is primarily a classical guitarist, but has some outstanding vocal chops and she doesn’t limit herself to just classical music. I’m cutting to 3:03 to feature the vocal performance; here is the full video, in case you want to watch the whole thing (and I hope you do).
Jolie Môme featuring Myriam Phiro
This band started appearing in my YouTube feed, probably because I frequently listen to The Avalon Jazz Band. I almost like this band better.
Here are the instructions for voting (and anyone can vote):
- Listen to the two songs.
- Decide which song you like the best.
- Vote for your favorite by leaving me a comment with your choice. If you feel like telling us why, feel free.
- Then, visit the other participants and vote in their Battles:
- Stephen at STMcC Presents Battle of the Bands
- Arlee at Tossing It Out
- Mike at Mike’s Ramblings
- Cathy at Curious As A Cathy
- Mary B at Jingle Jangle Jungle
- Diedre at Streampebbles
- Debbie at BOTB by Debbie D
I will stop the voting next Monday, September 22, at 12 PM Eastern and will count the votes and announce the winner shortly thereafter, so make sure you vote before then. The lines are now open. Good luck to Paola Hermosin and Jolie Môme!
Hi, John!
Thanks for visiting Shady’s Place, good buddy! I figured you’d want me to backtrack and find your mid month band battle, so here I am. As you recall, I featured Tatiana Eva-Marie and the Avalon Jazz Band on my blog a couple of years ago. You commented on that post, stating “When Tatiana Eva-Marie sings in French, I turn into Gomez Addams.” Well, I’m here to tell you that I feel the same way about your other musical discovery, Jolie Môme. I’d like to kiss her hand and continue up her arm all the way to her neck! 🙂 Can you say “C’est Si Bon”? 🙂 In fairness to contestant #1, Paola, I enjoyed her vocal as well, but all she had to work with was her acoustic guitar. Jolie Môme had the advantage of fronting a small band. I realize it is unfair to watch the videos instead of simply listening to the songs, but I couldn’t resist sneaking a peek or two or three at Jolie as she performed and being amazed at how well she sells the song. I’m going with Jolie Môme for the win!
Enjoy the rest of your weekend, good buddy John!

Thanks for voting! The band is Jolie Môme, the singer is Myriam Phiro. I think she records under her own name also. And, since you brought up “C’est Si Bon,” here’s their version. I think Adrien Chevalier and Vinny Raniolo, a couple of Avalon vets, are here…
Eartha Kitt did this as well. She was something else again…

Funny, I much prefer Paola with her exquisite guitar playing and her slightly operatic voice that has a soprano feel to it. The othe lady is very good and sings the dong as it’s almost meant to ve…in a smoke-filled, busy Cafe but I really enjoyed the first one.

I prefer the second one.

Though she is certainly good, Paola’s voice is too high for my taste.
I much prefer the vocals as well as the added instrumentation of the Jolie Mome version. Give my vote to her.
I just couldn’t muster up the initiative to do a midmonth Battle this August. I’ll be around on Sept 1.
My granddaughter put up a video of “La Vie en Rose” on YouTube last year. Kind of short with a lot of talk, but I like that she gave the song a shot.

She is a sweetie with her green hair and love of music. I love that she is discovering all different types of music. She could go further if she got voice lessons to just learn how yo use her talented voice
