Song of the Day: Archie Bell & The Drells, “Tighten Up”

Happy 78th birthday to Archie Bell, lead singer and front man for Archie Bell & The Drells, one of the main acts on Gamble and Huff’s Philadelphia International Records. They had eight Top 20 hits on the R&B chart, half of which were Top Ten hits. Their first single, “Tighten Up,” was the title track on their first album, and reached #1 on the Hot 100 and the R&B chart in 1968.

  1. In the mid eighties I worked as a stock person in a printing place…had the radio on 96.3 the oldies channel in Nashville at the time…that is where I learned a lot about the 50s and 60s music like this. Fun music.
