Stream of Consciousness Saturday 1 Minute

“Why Not!” That was the catchphrase used by the Borscht Belt comedian Dayton Allen. He used to appear regularly on whatever TV show Steve Allen (no relation, though Steve called him “my uncle”) as crazy characters, and go into these sometimes rambling discussions of whatever the character does.

Something I didn’t know about until this morning: he was a voice actor, voicing such characters as Heckle and Jeckle, Deputy Dog, Phineas T. Bluster and Flubadub on Howdy Doody, and Lancelot Link from the show Lancelot Link, Secret Chimp.

  1. I didn’t know that either about Lancelot Link. As I watched the little video I vaguely remember another show that had a chimp in it. Do you remember what that was? Maybe it was Lancelot Link and I never knew the show title? Was it just one chimp that was a really good actor? I’ll stay tuned for your next chimp reveal ;-)

    1. There have been more than a few shows with chimps in them, mostly from the late ’50’s and early ’60’s. There was the Disney movie “Monkeys Go Home” with Maurice Chevalier, Dean Jones and Yvette Mimieux about a guy who teaches chimps how to pick olives, and there was a TV show called “The Hathaways” with Peggy Cass and Jack Weston who were raising three chimps (played by the Marquis Chimps) as their kids. There was also a series of short subjects that were filmed by WGN in Chicago about a chimp named Chatter… but somehow I think you’re looking for something a little more recent… Guess the chimp reveal will have to wait for another day…

  2. I had no idea who he was but I enjoyed a good laugh. Funny, this was when, I think, tv was really good. What would he think of it now. I never heard ofvthis Chimp show but no CGI…how refreshing.

    1. TV was good then because they weren’t just looking to fill the time up. There were few TV stations and those shut down at night. Now the networks are competing with each other and with the big streaming services (Netflix, Hulu, HBO +, Disney etc.) to buy the good-quality programming.

  3. I had forgotten about Lancelot Link until now. I hope they treated the chimps well. It had to have been better than being a lab subject.
