Lamonte McLemore, who with Marilym McCoo founded the vocal group The Fifth Dimension, was born on this day in 1939. He’s the tall gentleman who always seems to be smiling, and who could blame him? They always look like they’re having so much fun… Anyway, “Stoned Soul Picnic” was written by Laura Nyro and released by the group in 1968. It reached #3 on the Hot 100 and the RPM Top 100 in Canada, and #2 on the R&B chart.
They were everywhere during the 70s and just look at these outfits. Is it wrong to say, I like it. Great voices and harmonies

I loved them because they looked like they were having so much fun, their clothes were slick and their harmonies were superb. They had great material, a lot of it written by Laura Nyro, one of my favorite songwriters. Laura had an excellent voice, but wasn’t considered commercial enough. The Fifth Dimension doing so well with her material (“Wedding Bell Blues,” “Stoney End,” “Stoned Soul Picnic” etc.) made her a nice pile of money.
