One of my favorite blues singers, who I used to go see whenever she was playing Biddy Mulligan’s on the Far North Side of Chicago, was Koko Taylor, born Cora Walton on this day in 1928. Dubbed “The Wang Dang Doodle Girl” because her signature piece was Willie Dixon’s “Wang Dang Doodle,” she was a true legend of the Blues. Here she does her signature song, accompanied by Little Walter on the harmonica and Hound Dog Taylor (no relation, he’s the guy standing behind her) on guitar as well as other local musicians (I think that’s Fred Below on the drums). At around 1:45, you see Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee along the side.
Would have loved to see her perform, you’ve had quite an amazing with music!

Just in the right places at the right times…. Growing up in Chicago exposed me to a lot of blues.

Love Chicago, my oldest daughter lives there. I had the opportunity a few years back to check out Buddy Guys Legends, very cool place.

She sang like that until she passed. An incredible singer, and one of the nicest people I’ve met.
