The great gospel singer Mahalia Jackson was born on this day in 1911. This performance of “My Lord And I” was taped for a short daily broadcast called Mahalia Jackson Sings in 1961. It aired over WBKB-TV in Chicago on weekday mornings in the ’50’s and ’60’s.
I remember seeing her on TV now and then. Didn’t care much for her style of music back then, but began to appreciate it more as my musical horizons expanded.

I had never really heard her until a few years ago, I felt really blessed hearing her. I can’t explain it other than to say that.

Yes she had a powerful voice. She and Aretha Franklin and Rosetta Tharp brought Gospel Music to the mainstream listeners.

The three of them really changed a lot of minds and hearts about gospel music. A lot of people who didn’t even care about gospel liked how the three of them sang. Sister Rosetta Tharp was a tremendous guitar player. She couldn’t do anything spectacular, but it was the way she did it.
