Country Music Hall of Fame and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame pianist Floyd Cramer was born on this day in 1933. His piano was key to the “Nashville sound,” which took country music and toned down the honky-tonk aspects of it, replacing fiddles and steel guitars with strings and horns. “Last Date” was a composition of Floyd’s, and was a #2 record in 1960.
What a great song. ♥️

One of my favorite pieces, along with his “On The Rebound.” Cramer was also the pianist on “Heartbreak Hotel.”

He was on a lot of the Nashville recordings, and I guess he got to Memphis as well. Just a great player all around.

Got to love Floyd, such a big part of so many songs from Nashville. He had that signature “slip note” style that is prominent on Patsy Cline’s “Crazy”.

It’s prominent in most of the songs he played on, I think. I’m sure a lot of players learned it by listening to Floyd playing it.

This was actually nice to listen to. It like a cross between Country and Percy Faith.

He was country, but a little more sophisticated. He was a big part of the Nashville Sound, which many call “countrypolitan,” a cross between country and pop music.
