Hank Marvin, lead guitarist and leader of the British instrumental group The Shadows, turns 81 years young today. Easily recognizable with his dark-rimmed glasses and red Fender Stratocaster, Hank and The Shadows were Cliff Richard’s backup band as well as making singles of their own. "Apache" was a hit for The Shadows in 1960, reaching #1 in the UK, Ireland, New Zealand, and South Africa, also reaching #4 in Australia, #6 in Germany, #8 in Spain, and #11 in the Netherlands.
I love this so g but only heard the original. This was cool to listen to with his neat guitar playing.

It’s a shame they never caught on here. Or Cliff Richard, for that matter, although he had a couple of hits here.

They were. Like I said, why they never made it here is a mystery…

Great tune in the days when an instrumental could top the charts. Unfortunate for The Shadows that another version was the big hit in the US. Thanks for the post!

Jørgen Ingmann’s, which was an international hit. Like I’ve been saying, it’s a shame The Shadows weren’t a bigger deal here.

I’ll have to listen to them when my headphones finish charging. They never got a lot of attention here.

Hank Marvin is, I think, another of those under-rated guitarists. He understand how not only to use notes but the space between them, and is incredibly effective as a result.

Good way to put it. Mick Goodrick, who wrote “The Advancing Guitarist,” urged his readers to focus on the gaps between notes. it’s a shame that The Shadows didn’t really get the attention that other guitar bands like The Ventures got…
