This past Sunday, I featured George and Ira Gershwin’s “Embraceable You” for Song Lyric Sunday. Being a standard, there are a lot of versions out there, so I thought I would choose two male singers singing it for today’s Battle.
Nat King Cole
Bing Crosby
Those are our contestants. If you’d like to cast a vote on one of these (and I highly encourage you to do so), here are your instructions.
- Listen to the two songs.
- Decide which song you like the best.
- Vote for your favorite by leaving me a comment with your choice. If you feel like telling us why, feel free.
- Then, visit the other participants and vote in their Battles:
- Stephen at STMcC Presents Battle of the Bands
- Arlee at Tossing It Out
- Mike at Mike’s Ramblings
- Cathy at Curious As A Cathy
- Mary B at Jingle Jangle Jungle
- Diedre at Streampebbles
- Debbie at BOTB by Debbie D
Next Tuesday, November 8, at 12 noon Eastern time, I’ll tally the votes and announce the winner, so be sure and get your vote to me by then.
The lines are now open. Good luck to Nat and Bing!
Hey John,
I’m glad you came by today. I meant to check back later yesterday for your battle but totally forgot. This is a nice battle, an old song with two wonderful old singers. In this battle with this song, my vote is going to Nat King Cole. His voice is more suited and is more warmly felt.
Thanks for voting in battle. Have a great day, my friend!

They are both great and I am going with Nat. This should be a very interesting battle!

I like both of these, very much, John. It’s close, but I have to go with Bing Crosby. His voice brings back too many good memories. I know, I should be able to limit my choice to this song, but I can’t.

Although I didn’t really care for that piano flourish in Nat’s version (to me that sudden tinkly uptick in the tempo sounded out of place in this song), I still prefer his voice and singing style to Der Bingle’s.
My Brother, on the other hand, is boting for Der Bingle.
1 for NAT.
1 for BING.

Wow! 2 biggies this week with one of the loveliest songs. I have to go with Bing because his voice is just so rich and deeper. Der Bingle gets my vote.

Now here’s a song that I know very well having heard it since my earliest childhood musical memories. I figured I’d be voting for Nat, but then, Bing!, that classic sound of Crosby’s crooning embraced my ears and the orchestration won me over.
A vote for Bing Crosby.

Bing and Nat both had great voices, but I’m going with Nat. I prefer the simpler, non-schmaltzy accompaniment.

Hi John!
Bing has a lot of instrumental back-up and a real smooth voice, but I rather like the rich simplicity of Nat’s version. A vote for Nat, please;-)
