BATTLE OF THE BANDS: “Embraceable You”

This past Sunday, I featured George and Ira Gershwin’s “Embraceable You” for Song Lyric Sunday. Being a standard, there are a lot of versions out there, so I thought I would choose two male singers singing it for today’s Battle.

Nat King Cole

Bing Crosby

Those are our contestants. If you’d like to cast a vote on one of these (and I highly encourage you to do so), here are your instructions.

  1. Listen to the two songs.
  2. Decide which song you like the best.
  3. Vote for your favorite by leaving me a comment with your choice. If you feel like telling us why, feel free.
  4. Then, visit the other participants and vote in their Battles:

Next Tuesday, November 8, at 12 noon Eastern time, I’ll tally the votes and announce the winner, so be sure and get your vote to me by then.

The lines are now open. Good luck to Nat and Bing!

  1. Hey John,

I’m glad you came by today. I meant to check back later yesterday for your battle but totally forgot. This is a nice battle, an old song with two wonderful old singers. In this battle with this song, my vote is going to Nat King Cole. His voice is more suited and is more warmly felt.

Thanks for voting in battle. Have a great day, my friend!

  2. I like both of these, very much, John. It’s close, but I have to go with Bing Crosby. His voice brings back too many good memories. I know, I should be able to limit my choice to this song, but I can’t.

  3. JOHN ~

Although I didn’t really care for that piano flourish in Nat’s version (to me that sudden tinkly uptick in the tempo sounded out of place in this song), I still prefer his voice and singing style to Der Bingle’s.

My Brother, on the other hand, is boting for Der Bingle.

    1 for NAT.
    1 for BING.

  4. Now here’s a song that I know very well having heard it since my earliest childhood musical memories. I figured I’d be voting for Nat, but then, Bing!, that classic sound of Crosby’s crooning embraced my ears and the orchestration won me over.

    A vote for Bing Crosby.
