The lovely chanteuse Jo Stafford was born on this day in 1917. She sang with The Pied Pipers (who were singers for Tommy Dorsey’s band and frequently backed Frank Sinatra) from 1938 until 1944, when she started her solo career. "Long Ago (And Far Away)" was written by Jerome Kern with lyrics by Ira Gershwin; this recording was done by Ms. Stafford for the Armed Forces Radio Service in 1944.
I’ve heard of her my entire life and I remember as a kid we had some singles by her. Such a lovely pure voice.

She’s worthy of the title “chanteuse”.

Great singer! She could sing the Yellow Pages and I would listen to her. So often overlooked along with the Pied Pipers.

Of all the great chanteuses of the 1950’s, she might have been the best, or at least right up there.

The dulcet tones of Jo Stafford! My favorite of hers is this one: https://youtu.be/zQfF84ackMM

Also one of my favorites, which I’ve used a couple of times, so I decided to go with another, also a great song. Some singers are just perfect…
