KIJV in Huron, South Dakota (about halfway between Sioux Falls and Pierre) has been at 1340 AM since it first went on the air in 1947. Now simulcasting on 95.3 FM as “Tiger 95,” they’re playing Hot Adult Contemporary music. Here’s their survey from all the way back in 1955, before I was born…
- Gale Storm, “I Hear You Knocking”
- Gogi Grant, “Suddenly There’s A Valley”
- The Platters, “Only You (And You Alone)”
- Al Hibbler, “He”
- Tennessee Ernie Ford, “Sixteen Tons”
- Billy Vaughn featuring Ken Nordine, “The Shifting Whispering Sands”
- Mitch Miller, His Orchestra & Chorus, “The Yellow Rose Of Texas”
- The Four Lads, “Moments To Remember”
- The Four Aces, “Love Is A Many-Splendored Thing”
- Roger Williams, “Autumn Leaves”
And that’s Top Ten Tuesday for November 22, 2022.
I had no idea that I hear you knocking is that old. I just keep hearing the rock version in my head. What a nice variation even though I am not a huge fan of talking in the songs like this( although I love Lorne Greene). The Yellow Rose of Texas…good ole Mitch.

I was familiar with Fats Domino’s “I Hear You Knocking” and thought that was the oldest.

I didn’t realize it went back that far either and remember Dave Edmunds more than anyone else.

Dave Edmunds was the first one I heard it from.

Glad you liked them! I enjoy taking these excursions to the pre-rock & roll era.

Yeah. A rose by any other name is still a rose.

Me too! I’m convinced everyone on WP is younger than me, even the ones who look old! 🤣

I was fourteen for this top ten and remember thinking of JoAnne Petty while listening to some of these romantic songs.

When I was a little girl I LOVED “The Yellow Rose Of Texas” and would dance around to it. I think the imagery of a yellow rose, which we didn’t have around us, resonated with me. I had blonde hair, I was a yellow rose.

That’s a wonderful image. I hope you danced around while you listened, for old times’ sake.

Gale Storm from “My Little Margie”?? Who knew? The fact the she was also a singer totally escaped me! 🤷🏼♀️
I really enjoyed her version of “I Hear You Knocking”.

Interesting, I’m the complete opposite, did not know she was an actor. She was the first singer to cover this Smiley Lewis song, later popularized by Dave Edmunds.

She had a few Top Ten hits in the mid-’50’s, including a cover of Bonnie Guitar’s “Dark Moon”…
