Argentine tenor saxophonist Leandro "Gato" Barbieri was born on this day in 1932. A key musician in the "free jazz" movement of the 1960’s, he’s best known for his recordings of Latin jazz in the 1970’s. "Straight Into The Sunrise" is from his 1997 album Que Pasa.
Nice bit of smooth jazz.

Thanks! He definitely got more smooth-jazzy in the mid-’70’s when he signed with A&M records. His 1976 album Caliente! is a smooth jazz classic.

Wow! Gato Barbieri. I remembered the name, but I had forgotten the music. Thank for bringing back great memories.

I heard of him when I was first getting curious about jazz in the late ’60’s, and his name stuck. When he became one of the original “smooth jazz” artists, I’d hear him all the time. He always had a great sound. Glad you liked it!
