BATTLE OF THE BANDS: “Sleigh Ride” Results

Only a few hours late. So?

My most recent Battle of the Bands was over the classic Leroy Anderson song "Sleigh Ride." The contestants were two school bands, the Oconomowoc High School Wind Symphony from Oconomowoc, Wisconsin and the Longfellow Middle School Symphonic Band from one of a half-dozen places in the US that has a Longfellow Middle School. Two voters, Lynn and Bluebird of Bitterness, were unable to choose between them, which, as you’ll soon discover, wouldn’t have made a difference.

Oconomowoc – 3

  • Birgit
  • Arlee
  • Mary B

Longfellow – 8

  • Diedre
  • Ed
  • Eugenia
  • Hilary
  • Willow
  • Dan
  • Stephen
  • Cathy

Can’t choose – 2

  • Lynn
  • Bluebird

So, Longfellow Middle School would have won regardless of how Lynn or Bluebird would have voted. I wouldn’t have been able to choose between the two bands, either. I’m just proud of all the kids that worked so hard to put on a good show. And, really, that’s what it’s all about, isn’t it? So congratulations to Longfellow Middle School for winning and to Oconomowoc High School for doing well in defeat.

Our next Battle of the Bands will be posted on Monday, January 16, 2023 at noon Eastern time. See you then!

  1. The was exceptional! Really no loser here. As evidenced on their faces, the kids were as happy to share the joy of music as we were to watch and listen πŸ˜‰ Merry Christmas, John!

  2. I really couldn’t choose, so I might have leaned toward the middle school just because the skill level is usually so marked between middle school and high school bands and in this case, it really was hardly perceptible. Fun. My son who has Downs loves that song, so he was bouncing away while I played them both.

      1. Well, my son loves it because both my kids were in the jazz band for several years in high school and he was at all their concerts. He also loves the Nutcracker my daughter (actually we were all in). Though his favorite musical has suddenly become Wizard of Oz. “Oz” he calls it. He loves music. He doesn’t care about watching anything else.

  3. John,

Both bands truly are amazing. The talent of these young people is incredible. Thanks for sharing the results. Yay for me, I’m on the winning side in your round. πŸ™‚ Have a good weekend, dear friend!

  4. Wow! I’m really surprised that this was so one-sided.

I liked both versions and would have thought this Battle had nail-biter potential. BUT!… that’s why we keep doing this BOTB thang. Because you really don’t know how things will shake out until you see it happen. Heck, even the Magic 8 Ball couldn’t predict my Battle outcomes in advance. And if the Magic 8 Ball can’t even do it, what chance would any of us mere mortals have?!
