WFRO-AM in Fremont, Ohio was set up as an AM counterpart to WFRO-FM (99.1 FM). The FM station went on the air in 1946 and the AM station three years later. The AM station was a daytime-only station which played a middle of the road format with news and talk, simulcasting with the FM station for part of the day. This went on for some time, until 2001, when the FM station was purchased by BAS Broadcasting and the AM station was purchased by Disney/ABC. Disney’s plan was to move its Flint, Michigan radio station WFDF (910 AM) into the Detroit area and increase its power to 50,000 watts, eventually shutting down WFRO, which they did in 2004. This is their Top Ten from the beginning of January 1956.
- Billy Duke and The Dukes – Rocky Piano

Now, this was nice to listen to and this station was around for a long time.

They were, and had the same format most of the time. That’s unusual, particularly for an AM radio station.

In January 1956 I was ready to turn 16 in May. Was enrolled in driver’s ed in preparation to getting a license. Had to have been the most important thing on the agenda. Thanks, John
