Song of the Day: Wilbert Harrison, “Kansas City”

Born on this day in 1929, R&B singer and multi-instrumentalist Wilbert Harrison. His 1959 recording of “Kansas City,” written in 1952 by Jerry Lieber and Mike Stoller, reached #1 on the charts and was awarded a Gold record. The recording has received a Grammy Hall of Fame Awatd (2001) and is on the list of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s 500 Songs That Shaped Rock & Roll.

    1. Muddy Waters did a pretty good cover of it a few years ago, but Harrison did the definitive version. His next hit was “Let’s Work Together,” which Canned Heat covered. His are the definiive versions, though.
