The husband-and-wife team of Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil have had a successful partnership, having written or cowritten 83 songs together and many more individually or with other songwriters. Their song “Somewhere Out There,” cowritten with James Horner and used in the 1988 animated film An American Tail, won two Grammys, one for Song of the year and the other for Best Song Written for Visual Media. I had a hard time limiting this to five songs, but here’s the full list for your listening enjoyment.
- Eydie Gormé, "Blame It On The Bossa Nova"
- The Animals, "We Gotta Get Out Of This Place"
- Dolly Parton, "Here You Come Again"
- Linda Ronstadt and James Ingram, "Somewhere Out There"
- Paul Revere and The Raiders, "Kicks"
Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, your Five For Friday, January 6, 2023.
Terrific selections, John.

Like Birgit, I’ve never heard of them but their songs are instantly recognisable. I love We Gotta Get Out of This Place.

Songwriters tend not to get the attention the performers do, and I wanted to change that. Glad you enjoyed it.

Oh man, I loved that song from American Tail! That’s an underrated animated movie, in my opinion,

Never heard of them and yet these songs are world famous. It just goes to show that real talent is nor known to the wider public unless they are in this industry or follow it like a true fan. Talk about eclectic! Amazing g that all these songs come from the same team because they are so different.
