Grand Forks, North Dakota is where KNOX has been since 1949. In the late 1950’s it became a Top 40 station, then dropped that format for news and talk. It simulcasts on K300BG at 107.9 FM and K277DN at 103.3 FM. Here’s their Top Ten from January 9, 1960.
- April Stevens, “Teach Me Tiger”
- Frankie Avalon, “Why”
- Jan & Dean, “My Heart Sings”
- The Fireballs, “Torquay”
- The Browns, “Scarlet Ribbons (For Her Hair)”
- Johnny & The Hurricanes, “Reveille Rock”
- Miss Toni Fisher, “The Big Hurt”
- Santo & Johnny, “Tear Drop”
- Johnny Preston, “Running Bear”
- Freddy Cannon, “Way Down Yonder In New Orleans”
And that’s Top Ten Tuesday for January 10, 2023.
I got “Running Bear” – I’m not sure it’s by the right artist, but since it’s all I’ve got, I’m not going to check.

I think there was only the one artist…

Was working part-time at Radio station WILS in Lansing Michigan. Loved the Big Hurt by Toni Fisher. Gave the opportunity to make a comment about her riding on the wing of a jet.

That’s a really cool song with the phase-shifting. Evidently that was the first time it was used. Even without that, it’s a good song, and I love her voice on it.

That first song? Wow she needs a room to make herself happy. Yikes! I listened to thec2nd and thec3rd almost made it to the end and then just stopped and I can’t move forward which is a bummer.

April Stevens, who sang the first song, was one-half of Nino and April, who sang “Deep Purple.” I was kind of surprised they let “Teach Me Tiger” on the radio…

What a great list. My mom was a huge Browns fan (The Old Lamplighter was her favorite) and this song always tugs at my heart. My sisters and I all memorized Running Bear – it became a family favorite and we could pantomime it to perfection!

Scarlet Ribbons affected me greatly as a child and into my adult years. It could really give you chills at times. I remember it fondly; one of the Christmas stories I wrote is loosely based on this song.
