Bluesman Elmore James, the “King of the Slide Guitar,” was born on this day in 1918. In an essay for Guitar Player magazine in 1977, Frank Zappa said of Elmore James, “Even though Elmore tended to play the same famous lick on every record, I got the feeling that he meant it.” “Dust My Broom” is the classic Elmore James song, and just about any guitarist starts with this one when learning to play slide.
Love these historical songs of the day features.

Muddy Waters was the same way. He meant it, too.

Love this. I’ll be grooving on this all day. Such a talent even if it is only one thing over and over.

Great stuff, John! You probably know this but here’s a bit of trivia for your readers: A little after half way through “For You Blue” (1:32 to be exact) by The Beatles, George Harrison says “Elmore James got nothin’ on this baby”. Check it out. https://youtu.be/TIFHRaZERHg
