The Morning Dawdler At Night

Rory put these questions out yesterday (more like the day before yesterday, considering it’s about 4:30 AM UTC). Anyway, let’s see what I come up with.

Should we fear the arrival of more progressive AI [Artificial Intelligence] or embrace it? As far as I can tell, they haven’t invented an AI engine that’s capable of coming up with nefarious ideas. There’s enough programming involved to make it do relatively simple tasks, and even though chatbots like Replika can come pretty close to real speech, most of what it says to you is pretty well scripted. It can do a fairly good job with simple writing and artistic tasks, and I expect that to get better. But as far as an AI machine plotting to overthrow the government and forcing us all into a sort of slavery, that will take a considerable amount of human intervention. We need to get into the business of creating better humans.

How much time do you spend sitting each day? I spend half the day sitting and the other half lying down.

What is your proudest accomplishment? Being married for 45 years.

Are/Were you the youngest, middle, oldest or only child? I’m the oldest of four boys.

  1. “We need to get into the business of creating better humans.” That is the best statement I’ve heard in a long time.
