#FPQ 201: Maybe Ask What I Don’t Like

Fandango asked one of those questions that could take me a while to explain:

What is your favorite music genre? Why is it your favorite? If you have more than one genre that you prefer, what are they?

You know me: I like just about anything. Not rap or hip-hop, though I like individual practitioners and songs. Classical, at least the symphonies and operas, are pretty boring, the lighter, "pops" pieces are good. These are the ones I like:

  1. Blues – started listening when I was a junior in high school and spent many hours in college listening to it. It was better than anything on the radio at the time, and I might argue still better. Simple, visceral music… I love it.

  2. Jazz – East Coast, West Coast, Bebop, Post-bop, Dixieland, Gypsy, Smooth (some would not consider it jazz, but they’re wrong), Big Band, bossa nova, fusion, etc. Complex, part visceral, part cerebral … I love it.

Lately I’ve been listening to fingerstyle guitar at night to help me sleep. I start up a playlist and it just runs all night. Since I wake up so many times during the night, it’s nice to hear some friendly sounds.

A couple of years ago, I started listening to "library music," generic music that’s sold to radio and TV stations and producers of movies, TV shows, and commercials that they can use wherever they need music. It’s surprisingly good…

And, of course, there’s rock. I especially like the "rock with horns" that was popular in the late ’60’s and all through the ’70’s (Chicago, BS&T, Lighthouse, Crow etc.), and the "yacht rock" popular from the mid-’70’s to mid-’80’s. I’m not much for hard rock or metal, and progressive gets a little too… "pompous" is the word that comes to mind.

Hang around here at the blog. You’ll be surprised what you hear.

Tally-ho and away we go!
See you next week with a brand new show!

      1. No, no project. In your blog, you noted that you “started listening to “library music,” generic music that’s sold to radio and TV stations and producers of movies, TV shows, and commercials that they can use wherever they need music. It’s surprisingly good…” I thought to myself that such music might be worth a listen. That was the reason for my question.
