I pull this out pretty often, and since today is a "choose your own" day, I’m pulling it out again, because I love it.
The lyrics are by a silversmith from Birmingham, England, by the name of Ron A. Webster, who sent it to singer Roger Whittaker, who at the time was running a radio program out of the UK where he would take listener poems and set them to music. Roger recorded it for his 1971 album New World In The Morning (called A Special Kind Of Man in the US and Canada). The wife of the program director at WGST in Atlanta (playing music at the time) heard the song while she was traveling in Canada in 1975, and suggested that they play the song. Response was overwhelming, and Roger had a hit on his hands that, as a single, has sold more than 10 million copies worldwide. From 1971, Rogert Whittaker, "The Last Farewell."
Roger Whittaker looks so much like my godmothers husband who sadly passed away on Valentines Day a couple of years ago. And Roger Whittaker was very popular in Germany when I grew up 😊

The US heard of him a little late, but he was popular here, too.

He was popular here. We’d see his ads on TV all the time, and I think that was the way they sold here.

You’re not likely to, either. I don’t want this music to get lost.

I agree. So many songs do get forgotten, and that’s a shame.

Were you in Chicago when Channel 9 was using it in their station ID’s? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HOzPY4yrGBs (the first 10-11 seconds of the clip)
