Wikipedia has this to say about sunshine pop…
Sunshine pop (originally known as soft pop) is a subgenre of pop music that originated in Southern California in the mid-1960s. Rooted in easy listening and advertising jingles, sunshine pop acts combined nostalgic or anxious moods with “an appreciation for the beauty of the world”. It largely consisted of lesser-known artists who imitated more popular groups such as the Mamas & the Papas and the 5th Dimension. While the Beach Boys are noted as prominent influences, the band’s own music was rarely representative of the genre.
Jim was kind enough to take my suggestion of using sunshine pop as the theme for today’s Song Lyric Sunday.
My selection coes from a band that started, not in Southern California, but in my hometown of Chicago, Illinois. Elaine McFarlane, called "Spanky" because her last name was close enough to that of George "Spanky" McFarland, from the Our Gang comedies of the 1930’s. They released their first album on Mercury Records on August 1, 1967, on which there were three hits, "Sunday Will Never Be The Same," "Making Every Minute Count," and the song I’ve selected for today, "Lazy Day." It was written by Tony Powers and George Fischoff, and peaked at #14 on the Hot 100 and #1 in Canada. The video clip is from the December 17, 1967 of The Ed Sullivan Show.
Blue sky, sunshine
What a day to take a walk in the park
Ice cream, daydream
Till the sky becomes a blanket of stars
What a day for picking daisies
And lots of red balloons
And what a day for holdin’ hands
And bein’ with you
Lazy day
Just right for lovin’ away
Lazy day
Made for strollin’ a lane
Baby you and me
(Baby you and me)
And a honey bee
‘Neath a shady tree
Lazy day, lazy day
Lazy day for you and me
Blue sky, sunshine
Flowers bloomin’, children sayin’ hello
Rowboats, bird notes
People smilin’ everywhere that we go
What a day to be together
And what a sky of blue
And what a day for thinkin’ right out loud
I love you
Lazy day
Just right for runnin’ away
Lazy day
Made for strollin’ a lane
Baby, you and me
(Baby you and me)
And the honey bee
(‘Neath a shady tree)
Lazy day, lazy day
Lazy day for you and me
Ba, ba, ba, ba…
What a day for pickin’ daisies
And lots of red balloons
And what a day for thinkin’ right out loud
I love you
Lazy day
Just right for lovin’ away
Lazy day
Made for strollin’ a lane
Lazy day
Just right for runnin’ away
Lazy day
Made for strollin’ a lane…

I think one of the members died of carbon monoxide poisoning just as they were getting popular, and that hastened their demise.

Me, too. There was only one song of theirs that was kind of a bummer, “Give A Damn,” and even that was good.
