Saxophonist, composer, and co-founder of the band Weather Report Wayne Shorter passed away yesterday at the age of 89. He was a close friend of Herbie Hancock, and played with Miles Davis before starting Weather report with keyboardist Josef Zawinul. "Birdland" is from Weather Report’s 1977 album Heavy Weather, which is definitely worth listening to.
My gosh, I have played this both on clarinet in a concert band and on saxophone in a stage band. But the most memorable was when I toured with a representative school band back when I was 16 or 17. Love this song and the memories it carries.

It’s a perfect song for high school and college bands to play: simple, though the timing is tricky, with a nice hook.
Seems logical that you’d play tenor sax because the tuning is the same as the clarinet, or did you play alto?

I can’t remember if it was this song–I think another big band song with similar name–my kids used to play in jazz band. Not sure.

This is popular with high school jazz bands, so my guess is that it was this one. Ask your kids if they remember it.
