Brazilian bossa nova singer Astrud Gilberto celebrates her 83rd birthday today. "Girl From Ipanema" ("Garota de Ipanema") was written by Antonio Carlos Jobim with Portuguese lyrics by Vinicius de Moraes and English lyrics by Norman Gimbel. It was the lead track on the 1964 album Getz/Gilberto by saxophonist Stan Getz and guitarist and singer João Gilberto. Astrud, João’s wife, who spoke no English at the time, sang the English lyrics phonetically. The result was an iconic performance.

As you say, iconic. No accident that such a talented bunch created such a great piece of music.

Lucky guess! I think if I heard more I might recognize the tune but maybe not the name, I should go back and give it a listen

With the movie “Black Orpheus” released not so many years before, we were ready for all things Brazilian — especially the music.
