#atozchallenge: Kajagoogoo

Some ’80’s music for a Thursday…

Kajagoogoo was founded in the thriving metropolis of Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire as Art Noveau in 1978. Itss members were Nick Beggs on bass guitar, Steve Askew on guitar, Stuart Neale on keyboards, and Jez Strode on drums. They later added Limahl (Christopher Hamill) as vocalist, and adopted their band, a combination of syllables a baby starts uttering. Limahl met Duran Duran’s Nick Rhodes, who got the band signed to EMI Records in 1982 and who co-produced their first single, "Too Shy." It was released in January 1983.

This reached #1 in the UK, Germany, and Ireland and #5 in the US. their only hit in the US.

Naturally, when everything seems to be going so well, tensions in the band led to Limahl being fired in mid-1983 and Beggs taking over lead vocal duties. They continued to record and perform until 1985, when they split up.

Kajagoogoo had one further Top Ten hit in the UK, "Big Apple."

Back with L tomorrow!

  1. Can’t go wrong with an 80s vibe. Never heard Big Apple until now. Not sure how I missed it. Too Shy was an MTV staple if memory serves.

  2. What a great 80’s flashback. That song used to be everywhere for a while it seemed. I like it, but I didn’t recall who had done it, if I ever even knew. Now I’ll forget the group again until I hear the name mentioned again. “Too Shy” has a great sound I think.

  3. I’m unfamiliar with them, but I have to say I’m not impressed with their choice of names. I’ve always thought naming your band was such an awesome opportunity for brilliance.
