Writer’s Workshop: “Mr. Blue Sky”

Today’s assignment: Share a song that feels like spring. How’s this: From 1977, Electric Light Orchestra, "Mr. Blue Sky"…

The sun is shining in the sky
There ain’t a cloud in sight
It’s stopped raining
Everybody’s in the play
And don’t you know, it’s a beautiful new day
Hey, hey, hey!

Running down the avenue
See how the sun shines brightly in the city
All the streets where once was pity
Mr. Blue Sky is living here today!
Hey, hey, hey!

Mr. Blue Sky
Please tell us why
You had to hide away for so long (so long)
Where did we go wrong?
Mr. Blue Sky
Please tell us why
You had to hide away for so long (so long)
Where did we go wrong?

Hey, you with the pretty face
Welcome to the human race!
A celebration
Mr. Blue Sky’s up there waiting
And today is the day we’ve waited for
Ah, ah, ah

Oh, Mr. Blue Sky
Please tell us why
You had to hide away for so long (so long)
Where did we go wrong?
Hey there Mr. Blue!
We’re so pleased to be with you
Look around, see what you do
Everybody smiles at you

Hey there Mr. Blue!
We’re so pleased to be with you
Look around, see what you do
Everybody smiles at you!

Mr. Blue Sky
Mr. Blue Sky
Mr. Blue Sky

Mr. Blue, you did it right
But soon comes Mr. Night
Creeping over, now his hand is on your shoulder
Never mind, I’ll remember you this
I’II remember you this way!

Mr. Blue Sky
Please tell us why
You had to hide away for so long (so long)
Where did we go wrong?
Hey there Mr. Blue (sky)
We’re so pleased to be with you (sky)
Look around see what you do (blue)
Everybody smiles at you

Jeff Lynne told the BBC:

It was dark and misty for 2 weeks, and I didn’t come up with a thing. Suddenly the sun shone and it was, ‘Wow, look at those beautiful Alps.’ I wrote Mr. Blue Sky and 13 other songs in the next 2 weeks.

Sometimes it just takes the weather clearing up to kick you back into shape.

There’s something so positive, so happy, so downright joyous about this song that I can’t help getting a little choked up when I hear it. To me, that’s spring, coming back to life.

So, there you have it…

  1. They sure had some impressive hairdos! I would definitely enjoy Mr. Blue Sky’s appearance this week so I can start my garden!

    1. For me, it’s a catharsis. There have been times when I just cry my eyes out when I hear it, because it’s as though it lifts a huge weight off my shoulders.Somehow, I always feel better after hearing it.

  2. It was 1980, and I would not have graduated high school without this glorious song. I would blast it in my room, dancing and leaping– it’s called ecstatic dance now– to get myself going in the morning as I dreaded my school and graduating. My beloved father had cancer, had always said that he had “to stick around to see me graduate, ” and he died that summer. Thank you, ELO, for helping me through that painful time, and many others to this day. Music IS Magic.

  3. Brilliant choice John. Love ELO. When we were house sitting for a friend we had a TV in the bedroom and found a live performance purely by chance. Fabulous, and I was hooked all over again.

  4. I didn’t realize that was by ELO. I’ve heard but, but assumed it was Beatles, since they did that same style of song in some of their stuff, but I’m actually no good at knowing what artist did what song. Not my kind of trivia.
