Country and bluegrass musician Roy Clark was born on this day in 1933. A superior guitarist who also played banjo and fiddle and was a superb singer, he was the host of Hee Haw for its entire run, and also appeared on talk shows and sitcoms. Here he plays a version of "Malagueña" on a 1975 episode of The Odd Couple. Tony Randall and Jack Klugman look on as their characters, Felix Unger and Oscar Madison.
(Sorry this is delayed. I went to bed before setting this up.)

Roy Clark was unbelievably musically gifted. He could sing and play seriously or with a twinkle in his eyes and a smirk on his lips.

He was a wizard on strings, so much talent on that show. I wonder if he’s sometimes overlooked because it was a comedy.

You had some of the finest country musicians and comedians on that show, plus all the guest stars. It had wide appeal, so even city folks liked it. Roy wasn’t just a country singer and picker, he could play just about anything. If being the star of “Hee Haw” is what’s keeping him from being recognized as the great musician he was, it’s a terrible injustice.
