Song of the Day: Jan Hammer, “Crockett’s Theme”

Rock and jazz keyboardist Jan Hammer turns 75 day. He was a member of John McLaughlin’s Mahavishnu Orchestra and graduated from that to being a sideman and solo atist. He wrote the music fo the TV show Miami Vice, from which "Crockett’s Theme" is taken.

  1. Hi John – not a show I ever watched – being in South Africa … but I remember it and Don Johnson … while 11 children for Phillip Michael Thomas – well one comes across things! Cheers Hilary

  2. Miami Vice is one of the American shows I occasionally watched while still living in Germany. I was more into Magnum, P.I. and some of the earlier detective shows like The Streets of San Francisco, Kojak and Cannon. Oh, and just one more thing, Columbo! With all of that said, “Crockett’s Theme” was a nice track.

    1. We’re still big Columbo fans. We know all of the episodes so well that we only have to mention the villain. Of course, with Jack Cassidy, Robert Culp, or Patrick McGoohan we need a little help.

  3. This took me back. Wow. I wasn’t an I-can’t-miss-an-episode Miami Vice fan, but I did enjoy the show. When I hear the music from the show, I immediately flash back to my life during that “era” and what I was doing.

    1. We never watched it during its first run. They ran a few years ago on Cozi TV and we would stay up and watch it, but never really got into it, though I can see its appeal. There were some good clips of flamingoes…

  4. I never got into Miami Vice because I felt the leads were to into themselves especially the Black dude. I know politically incorrect but I can’t remember his name. I think he compared himself to Jesus once and then his career went downhill. Don Johnson did ok despite drugs and Melanie Griffith.
This is a truly nice song…sounds ethereal to me

    1. I liked the show a little more than Mary did. We watched it on Cozi TV when they were running it late at night. It was good for the music, not just Hammer’s, and I liked the flamingoes…
