Song of the Day: Gordon Lightfoot, “Carefree Highway”

Got the sad news today that Canadian singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot passed away on Monday at the age of 84. I’ll probably do a full tribute to him on Friday, but for right now here’s "Carefree Highway," my favorite song of his. It was the second single from his 1974 album Sundown and reached #10 on the Hot 100 as well as spending a week at #1 on the Easy Listening chart. He named it after a section of Arizona Highway 75 in north Phoenix.

  1. Gorgeous tune! When I heard it first, instead of “Carefree Highway”, I thought he was singing “Every Highway.” Gordon Lightfoot had a great sense of melody, and his soft baritone voice was pretty distinct. I have a post about his music scheduled for Friday.

  2. Being from Michigan and hanging on Lake Superior, he was always one of my favorites. Our camp was four miles from Gitchee Gumee. He had too many great songs. This one was not my favorite, though I liked almost all of them. My favorites: Early Morning Rain, For Lovin Me, Rainy Day People, and The Wreck of the Edmund… are all my favorites. Every time I hit the camp (where I lived off the grid) it was my habit to put on a Lightfoot CD and pour a glass of wine… He was pretty cute until he got sick.
