Song Lyric Sunday: K. C. & The Sunshine Band, “(Shake, Shake, Shake) Shake Your Booty”

Jim has chosen DISCO! as the theme for today…

So, let’s get down to it!

KC & The Sunshine Band started in 1973 in Hialeah, Florida. KC is Harry Wayne Casey (whose name would be great for a serial killer, a la John Wayne Gacy) and The Sunshine Band are all from the Sunshine State. This band had a hell of a run in the mid- to late-’70’s, with five #1’s and two #2’s in that period of time. "(Shake, Shake, Shake) Shake Your Booty" was the third of those five #1’s, as well as being #1 on the R&B chart, #9 on the Dance chart, #1 in Canada, #6 in The Netherlands, and #7 in New Zealand in 1976.

Aah, everybody, get on the floor
Let’s dance
Don’t fight the feeling
Give yourself a chance

Shake shake shake, shake shake shake
Shake your booty, shake your booty
Oh, shake shake shake, shake shake shake
Shake your booty, shake your booty

Aah, You can, you can do it
Very well
You’re the best in the world
I can tell

Oh, Shake shake shake, shake shake shake
Shake your booty, shake your booty
Oh, shake shake shake, shake shake shake
Shake your booty, shake your booty
Woah, woah, yeah

Shake shake, shake shake
Aah, Shake shake, shake shake

Aah, Shake shake shake, shake shake shake
Shake your booty, shake your booty
Oh, shake shake shake, shake shake shake
Shake your booty, shake your booty

Aah, Shake shake, shake shake, shake your booty
Aah, don’t fight the feeling
Shake shake, shake shake, shake your booty
Aah, give yourself a chance

Shake shake, shake shake, shake your booty
You can do it, do it
Shake shake, shake shake, shake your booty
Come home with mama now

Shake shake, shake shake, shake your booty
Woo woo hoo
Shake shake, shake shake, shake your booty
Aah, run down to sister

Shake shake (come on), shake shake (come on) on your booty
Aah! do your duty. Aah haa
Shake shake (come on), shake shake (come on)

BONUS SONG TIME!

A couple of hits later, KC and crew came out with "Keep It Comin’, Love," in 1977. It only reached #2 in the US (still topped the R&B chart and was #9 on the Dance chart and #1 in Canada), but I always liked it better…

Keep it coming, love! Keep it coming, love!
Don’t stop it now, don’t stop it, no, don’t stop it now, don’t stop!
Keep it coming, love! Keep it coming, love!
Don’t stop it now, don’t stop it, no, don’t stop it now, don’t stop it!
Don’t let your well run dry, don’t stop it now.
Don’t give me no reasons why, don’t stop it now!
Don’t build me up just to let me drop, don’t stop it now!
Don’t turn me on just to turn me off, don’t stop it now!
Don’t tell me there ain’t no more, don’t stop it now!
Don’t turn me down and just close your door, don’t stop it now!

  1. I love this song and the group. I saw them in person many moons ago when I lived in Florida. It’s one of those songs where one just can’t sit still. Great selection, John.

  2. Harry Wayne Casey a great name for a serial killer? You’re killing me, John! :-)

That said, I bet many of our fellow bloggers feel like that when it comes to KC and the Sunshine Band. For some reason, certain music artists trigger strong reactions where folks either love them or hate them, so here’s my dirty little secret.

The guy who loves blues, rock, soul and most ’60s music actually likes, L.I.K.E.S., KC and the Sunshine Band! Let’s see how many of my followers will now unsubscribe from following me! :-)

To qualify the above statement, while I believe there’s better disco music like the Bee Gees, Gloria Gaynor and Donna Summer, for example, KC and the Sunshine Band had some catchy and groovy tunes that make you feel like shake, shake, shake – shake, shake, shake – shake your booty! :-)

It’s that simple. I don’t know why music oftentimes is so divisive!

    1. Another was Elmer Wayne Henley, for almost the same thing Gacy did.

I was in college when these songs were popular and remember dancing to them. A lot of fond memories there. And sure, there were some disco artists that were better, but none were as fun, I think.

Really, about the only kind of music I don’t like is rap/hip-hop, which is next week’s topic. I have some very strange tastes, such as “beautiful music” (e.g. Percy Faith, Mantovani, etc.), elevator (Muzak, which can be quite relaxing), production/library (generic music for TV, radio, and film), Bollywood, Mongolian pop, Nigerian pop…

  3. They had some big hits here too, though neither of these reached our top twenty. Their biggest was Give It Up, which made #1 though it did much less well over there. Weird, huh?

        1. The classic example is “Jimmy Loves Mary Ann” by The Looking Glass. It was the follow-up to “Brandy (You’re A Fine Girl,” which had been a huge hit for them. “Jimmy” never even made it to the Top 40 nationally, but in Chicago, it was a big hit, and no one knows why.

          1. I’ve just looked them up. Wiki says “Jimmy” made #33, but not quite the level of their big hit. It’s always a surprise to me when a follow up doesn’t do as well, when it seems to be cast from the same mould. Neither made our top fifty, not really our thing I guess.
