Final score: Frank Sinatra 11, The Arrogant Worms 1.

I think I was saved from a shutout by the two Canadian voters who voted for the Canadian band. (NOTE: At least, that’s what I thought until I realized one of them also voted for Ol’ Blue Eyes.) Anyway, congratulations to The Chairman of the Board and a hearty "well done" to The Arrogant Worms.

Our next Battle of the Bands is on Monday, February 1. See you then!

BATTLE OF THE BANDS: “The Coffee Song”

I’m back with another Battle of the Bands. Still working with the "two songs with the same name" theme, here are two songs called "The Coffee Song."

Contestant 1: Frank Sinatra: From his album Ring A Ding Ding, a song by Bob Hilliard and Richard Miles.

Contestant 2: The Arrogant Worms: Never heard of these guys before today. Wikipedia tells us "The Arrogant Worms are a Canadian musical comedy trio that parody many musical genres." Haven’t been able to find what album this is from.

Those are our contestants. Here’s what you do:

  1. Listen to the two songs.
  2. Decide which song you like the best.
  3. Vote for your favorite by leaving me a comment with your choice. If you feel like telling us why, feel free.
  4. Then, visit the other participants and vote in their Battles:

I’ll tally the votes and announce the winner next Friday, January 22, so be sure and have your vote to me by Thursday night.

The lines are now open. Good luck to Frank Sinatra and The Arrogant Worms!

BATTLE OF THE BANDS: “You Belong To Me”

This week, we have two lovely songs named "You Belong To Me" sung by two lovely ladies.

CONTESTANT #1: Patsy Cline: A ballad from the early 1950’s by Chilton Price, Pee Wee King, and Redd Stewart that had been done by Patti Page, Jo Stafford, and Dean Martin. From Patsy’s 1962 album Sentimentally Yours.

CONTESTANT #2: Carly Simon: A song by Carly and Michael McDonald that was originally done by The Doobie Brothers. This was the first single from Carly’s 1978 album Boys In The Trees, and reached #6 on the Hot 100, earning her a Grammy nomination in 1979.

Here are your instructions, if you’ve never done this before or it’s been a while.

  1. Listen to the two songs.
  2. Decide which song you like the best.
  3. Vote for your favorite by leaving me a comment with your choice. If you feel like telling us why, feel free.
  4. Then, visit the other participants and vote in their Battles:

I’ll tally the votes and announce the winner next Tuesday, December 22, so be sure and submit your voice before then.

The lines are now open. Best of luck to Patsy and Carly!

BATTLE OF THE BANDS: “Anyway You Want It”

I have two songs named "Anyway You Want It" in today’s battle.

Contestant #1: The Dave Clark 5

From their 1964 US album Coast To Coast, this song was a bit ahead of its time thanks to the use of echo and reverb. It reached #14 in the US and #24 in the UK.

Contestant #2: Journey

A song written by Steve Perry and Neal Schon, this appeared on their 1980 album Departure and was released at the same time. It reached #24 on the Hot 100.

Those are our contestants. Anyone can vote in these battles, and please do! Here are the directions:

  1. Listen to the two songs.
  2. Decide which song you like the best.
  3. Vote for your favorite by leaving me a comment with your choice. If you feel like telling us why, feel free.
  4. Then, visit the other participants and vote in their Battles:

I’ll tally the votes next Tuesday, December 8 and announce the winner then, so please get your vote to me before then.

The lines are now open. Good luck to The Dave Clark 5 and Journey!
