Song Lyric Sunday EXTRA: “26 Miles (Santa Catalina)”

I knew that if I asked my readers that someone would know! In my recent SLS post, I used “Sh-Boom” by The Crew-Cuts and said that there was another song that sounded just like it, but I couldn’t think of the name. Well, Maggie, who blogs over at From Cave Walls, came up with the answer…

“26 Miles (Santa Catalina)” was written by Bruce Belland and Glen Larson (who went on to write and produce TV shows such as BJ and the Bear, Magnum, P.I., and Battlestar Galactica) when they were at Hollywood High School and members of the singing group The Four Preps. The song reached #2 on the Hot 100 and #6 on the R&B chart in 1958.

The lyrics are in the video, but here they are acccording to Songlyrics.com:

Twenty- six miles across the sea
Santa Catalina is a-waitin’ for me
Santa Catalina, the island of romance, romance, romance, romance

Water all around it everywhere
Tropical trees and the salty air
But for me the thing that’s a-waitin’ there-romance

It seems so distant, twenty-six miles away
Restin’ in the water serene
I’d work for anyone, even the Navy
Who would float me to my island dream

Twenty- six miles, so near yet far
I’d swim with just some water-wings and my guitar
I could leave the wings but I’ll need the guitar
for romance, romance, romance, romance

Twenty- six miles across the sea
Santa Catalina is a-waitin’ for me
Santa Catalina, the island of romance

A tropical heaven out in the ocean
Covered with trees and girls
If I have to swim, I’ll do it forever
Till I’m gazin’ on those island pearls

Forty kilometers in a leaky old boat
Any old thing that’ll stay afloat
When we arrive we’ll all promote romance, romance, romance, romance

Twenty- six miles across the sea
Santa Catalina is a-waitin’ for me
Santa Catalina, the island of romance, romance, romance, romance

Twenty- six miles across the sea
Santa Catalina is a-waitin’ for me

Thanks again, Maggie!

Song Lyric Sunday: “Sh-Boom”

So today’s prompt is “Desire/Lust/Romance/Passion,” and as usual I’ve gone with the first song that popped into my mind. Actually, there’s a song that sounds a lot like this one where the quartet sings a line “romance, romance, romance, romance.” If you know which one that is, drop me a comment. In the meantime, here’s the one I chose…

“Sh-Boom,” according to Wikipedia:

“Sh-Boom” (sometimes referred to as “Life Could Be a Dream”) is an early doo-wop song. It was written by James Keyes, Claude Feaster, Carl Feaster, Floyd F. McRae, and James Edwards, members of the R&B vocal group the Chords and published in 1954. It was a U.S. top ten hit that year for both the Chords (who first recorded the song) and the Crew-Cuts.

Today you’re getting the Crew-Cuts’ version, because I’m most familiar with it.

Genius has the lyrics:

Hey nonny ding dong, alang alang alang
Boom ba-doh, ba-doo ba-doodle-ay

Oh, life could be a dream (sh-boom)
If I could take you up in paradise up above (sh-boom)
If you would tell me I’m the only one that you love
Life could be a dream sweetheart

Hello hello again
Sh-boom and hopin’ we’ll meet again

Oh, life could be a dream (sh-boom)
If only all my precious plans would come true (sh-boom)
If you would let me spend my whole life lovin’ you
Life could be a dream sweetheart

Now every time I look at you
Something is on my mind (dat-dat-dat-dat-dat-duh)
If you do what I want you to
Baby, we’d be so fine

Oh, life could be a dream (sh-boom)
If I could take you up in paradise up above (sh-boom)
If you would tell me I’m the only one that you love
Life could be a dream sweetheart

Sh-boom sh-boom Ya-da-da Da-da-da Da-da-da Da
Sh-boom sh-boom Ya-da-da Da-da-da Da-da-da Da
Sh-boom sh-boom Ya-da-da Da-da-da Da-da-da Da, sh-boom

Sh-boom sh-boom Ya-da-da Da-da-da Da-da-da Da
Sh-boom sh-boom Ya-da-da Da-da-da Da-da-da Da
Sh-boom sh-boom Ya-da-da Da-da-da Da-da-da Da, sh-boom

Every time I look at you
Somethin’ is on my mind
If you do what I want you to
Baby, we’d be so fine

Life could be a dream
If I could take you up in paradise up above
If you would tell me I’m the only one that you love
Life could be a dream sweetheart

Hello hello again
Sh-boom and hopin’ we’ll meet again
Boom sh-boom

Hey nonny ding dong, alang alang alang (sh-boom)
Ba-doh, ba-doo ba-doodle-ay
Life could be a dream
Life could be a dream, sweetheart

Life could be a dream
If only all my precious plans would come true
If you would let me spend my whole life loving you
Life could be a dream sweetheart

(dee-oody-ooh, sh-boom, sh-boom)
(dee-oody-ooh, sh-boom, sh-boom)
(dee-oody-ooh, sh-boom, sh-boom)
Sweetheart

And that’s Song Lyric Sunday for June 9, 2019.
