BATTLE OF THE BANDS: “Do It Again” Results

So, last time I decided to give you three different songs, all of which were named “Do It Again,” and have you choose the one you liked the best. The contestants were Steely Dan, The Kinks, and The Beach Boys. Unfortunately for Ray Davies and crew, The “Do It Again” by The Kinks got no votes. Sorry guys, better luck next time.

So that left Steely Dan and The Beach Boys in a battle between East and West Coast. I knew The Beach Boys would get at least one vote (from Stephen, who did not disappoint), which would keep them from getting shut out. Still, the result was pretty much decisive:

Steely Dan: 8

The Beach Boys: 2

Congratulations to Steely Dan (essentially Donald Fagen, since Walter Becker passed away in 2017) and a hearty “well done” to The Beach Boys.

My next Battle of the Bands will be next Saturday, June 15, so be sure and stop by then!

Did you ever notice that there are songs that have the same title but are completely different songs? In this battle, we’re going to take a look and a listen to three songs that share the title “Do It Again.”

Steely Dan

From their 1972 album Can’t Buy A Thrill, this was the first single and it reached #6 on the Hot 100, #7 on the Cash Box survey and #8 on the Record World survey.

The Kinks

The Kinks recorded their “Do It Again” on their 1984 album Word of Mouth. It did reasonably well on the Hot 100 and Mainstream Rock charts.

The Beach Boys

The Beach Boys’ “Do It Again” was a non-album single that was released two weeks after their 1968 album Friends. Surprisingly, it only reached #20.

I think you know the drill by now:

  1. Listen to all three songs.
  2. Decide which you like the best.
  3. Vote for your favorite by leaving me a comment with your choice. If you feel like telling us why, feel free.
  4. Then, visit the other participants and vote in their Battles:

I’ll tally the votes and announce the winner next Saturday, June 8, so be sure and get your vote in by then. Remember, you don’t need to participate in Battle of the Bands to vote.

The lines are now open. Good luck to Steely Dan, The Kinks and The Beach Boys!
