BATTLE OF THE BANDS: Tony Burrows Results

Just to refresh your memory: my last Battle of the Bands featured three songs done by three different bands, all of which had the same lead singer, Tony Burrows. Here are the results:

Edison Lighthouse, “Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes)”: 9

Brotherhood of Man, “United We Stand”: 1

The First Class, “Beach Baby”: 3

So, congratulations to the band calling itself Edison Lighthouse (according to Wikipedia, “Edison Lighthouse was named after the Eddystone Lighthouse off the coast of Devon. The band later dropped the Lighthouse and became just Edison.”), and kudos to Brotherhood of Man and The First Class.

Our next Battle of the Bands will take place on Saturday, June 1. See you then!

BATTLE OF THE BANDS: Tony Burrows

You’ve probably heard Tony Burrows before and didn’t realize it. He was lead singer on records made by bands that often consisted of studio musicians in the ’60’s and ’70’s. He was one of the singers on The Pipkins’ “Gimme Dat Ding” and the lead singer on White Plains’s “My Baby Loves Lovin’.” The three contestants in today’s battle are all songs where Tony sang lead. They were all Top 20 hits in the US, and none of us had any clue that they were all done by the same people.

Edison Lighthouse, “Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes)” Reached #5 in early 1970 in the US. Our 8th grade teacher was Sister Rosemary, so we all got a laugh when this came on.

Brotherhood of Man, “United We Stand” Peaked at #13 in mid-1970. One of the first records I bought after I bought my stereo.

The First Class, “Beach Baby” Peaked at #4 in the US. Burrows attempts an American accent on this one.

So, it’s up to you: give these three songs a listen, decide which one reigns supreme, and vote for it by leaving me a comment. If you feel like expounding on why, I won’t stop you. Then, visit our other Battles at the addresses below:

I’ll announce the winner next Wednesday, May 22, so be sure and cast your ballot before then. Remember, you don’t need to hold a Battle of the Bands on your blog to vote. If you would like to join us and hold your own Battle on the 1st and 15th of each month, let Stephen know (his address is above).

The lines are now open. Good luck to all of Tony Burrows’s musical endeavors!
