BATTLE OF THE BANDS: “The Look Of Love” Results

This wasn’t much of a contest, but then, hindsight is always 20/20. I’m talking, of course, about my most recent BotB, which pitted Sergio Mendes and Brasil ’66 against Isaac Hayes to determine who you thought did the better version of Bacharach and David’s “The Look Of Love.” Anyway, I’ve tallied the votes and here are the results:

Sergio Mendes and Brasil ’66: 9 ½

Isaac Hayes: 4 ½

The half-votes were from Willow, who couldn’t decide but liked them both. Hey, I know the feeling. Anyway, Congratulations to Sergio, Janis, Lani and the rest of Brasil ’66 and a pat on the back to Isaac for a job well done.

Somehow, this seemed too easy. I’ll haev to come up with something really weird for my next Battle, which will be next Wednesday, May 15. Be sure and join us then!

BATTLE OF THE BANDS: “The Look Of Love”

I’m back! Maybe things will be back to normal soon. I the meantime, I’m going to get moving in that direction.

Burt Bacharach and Hal David’s “The Look Of Love” was written in 1967 for the James Bond spoof Casino Royale. The movie version was sung by Dusty Springfield, and it’s been recorded many times since then, including versions by Dionne Warwick, Vanilla Fudge (!), Diana Krall, and the two artists who will be competing in today’s battle.

Sergio Mendes & Brasil ’66

Sergio Mendes recorded this for his 1968 album Look Around, with Janis Hansen (and not Lani Hall) recording the lead vocal. It reached #4 in the US.

Isaac Hayes

Isaac Hayes recorded the song in 1970 for his album …To Be Continued. It was featured in the movie Dead Presidents and has been sampled heavily by hip-hop and rap artists.

Now it’s your turn…

So, which of these do you like better? Listen to both, decide which is more pleasing to your ears, and vote for it by leaving me a comment below. If you want to expound on why you like that one better, feel free! Then, how’s about visiting the other BotB participants and voting in their battles, too?

I’ll announce the winner of today’s battle next Wednesday, May 5, so be sure and vote by then.

The lines are now open. Good luck to Sergio and Isaac!
